26 Mar 2012 - Update Highest Rated Pain Stories Highest Rated Gain Stories Vodafail Local Facebook Page
Dear visitor,

Since its inception Vodafail.com has made a significant contribution towards raising awareness of the problems and issues faced by Vodafone customers.

Vodafone Australia customers have had the opportunity to voice their concerns, their fears and their troubles from every corner of Australia and beyond our borders. You have gathered the courage to stand up for your rights as consumers and to make your voice heard.

Each and every person who shared their story should have a sense of pride in this achievement and the changes that have occurred since the start of Vodafail.com.

More recently, traffic to Vodafail.com has declined significantly. Having achieved the goal of raising awareness and promoting concrete action in early 2011, we have now reached the point of closing Vodafail to new complaints. The site will remain online for as long as possible as a reminder and an example of what is possible when we share our experiences.

It has been a privilege to run this initiative and I'm am forever grateful for the help and support I've received. In particular I would like to thank Melissa, David and Travis for their continued efforts over the past 15 months. I'm also thankful and humbled by the support of ACCAN, Choice magazine and a wide range of media outlets, blogs and websites.

You can still browse existing stories and find out how to file a complaint if you are experiencing problems.

Until next time,

Adam Brimo

7668 Someone from NT thinks vodafone is massive fail at 28 Dec 2010 08:08:57 PM
Used to be able to send picture messages on an old Nokia. Upgrade to a HTC and it's a no go in Katherine but worked in Darwin. Until it stopped working in Darwin. And wouldn't work in Brisbane or the Gold Coast. 2 emails sent, finally got a reply to call technical service. They hung up on me after 45 mins, called to complain, funnily enough they never answered. Seriously, how hard can it be?

7409 Someone from NT thinks vodafone is Shithouse Customer Service at 28 Dec 2010 06:26:24 PM
We're in cyclone season in Darwin and I'm on call in the event of a cyclone. Unfortunately Vodafone network goes offline during even minor storms. First call to customer service basically blamed me for living in Darwin. 2nd call ended with me on hold for 2.5hrs before they hung up on me. 3rd call had me on hold for another 2hrs and no result. 4th call had me on hold for 1.5hrs, Vodafone agreed to waive my bill for my two phones for three months, still shitty coverage.
5th call was to telecommunications onbudsman. Vodafone call me and get stuck into me for not trying harder with their customer service people.
Last call was to Telstra to change carrier.

My husband says he doesn't get reception in the pub. Of course I thought that was crap until he made me go into the pub to confirm that his reception does drop out immediately. I thought it might be a conspiracy thought up by a clever pub owner who has worked out a way to scramble the signal, but no, it was just good old Vodafone. I can't even make calls inside my house!

We have three mobile phones in our family and we have switched them all to Vodafone. The reception is terrible and most of the time have no reception at all. My husband and I use our phones for work so it sucks. We live in Darwin not in a rural area and can't understand why this is the case?

6411 Someone from NT thinks vodafone is exactly what I expected at 28 Dec 2010 11:06:19 AM
I live in Katherine and coverage is hopeless. Every couple of months there is none at all. But to be perfectly honest, this is why they are cheaper. Telstra may have the worst possible customer service and cost you a small fortune, but they have put the money into installing a decent network. Vodafone has not and is cheaper as a result. No point complaining about simple coverage issues. Their customer service has always been great (coming from lifelong Telstra usage) and while they did try and charge me for a support call once, they removed the charge as soon as I pointed it out. If you live somewhere like the NT, it's kind of obvious that you should do the research before signing up to any sort of wireless coverage contract. The contract doesn't guarantee coverage. Their 3G network is actually hugely better than Telstra's (for those with a phone that will work with standard 3G but not nextG frequencies).
So yes, the Vodafone network is pretty hopeless, but if you do the research before signing anything you're pretty safe. I am on a month by month contract and so I could ditch them at any time, but as long as they give me a better deal...

All that said, I have never had a call dropped or any issues while well within network coverage. I can sympathise with that. Unless you use an iPhone, then it's entirely your fault.

I signed up for 3G internet (usb modem) through Vodafone 22 months ago for a 24 month contract. After signing up discovered there was no 3G reception in Alice Springs. Called to complain and was told I could have half price slow internet for a short while (I think I was told a few months max) and then pay the full price plan for the rest of the contract once 3G started in Alice Springs. I think it was almost 6 months of NO internet (not sure now why I didn't officially complain about that at the time), and since then has been very unreliable and still quite slow - some days not working at all - always having to try to stick the usb out the window to get a decent signal. Until two and a half months ago when the internet completely cut out, and I have since had countless phone calls to Vodafone trying to resolve the issue - equaling countless hours on hold, and then not having anything resolved. I still have no internet.

I also have a mobile phone through Vodafone (24 mth contract - coming to a close) and have had very poor reception, often no reception for the last 24 months.

I wonder if I could also complain about the stress caused when my phone was cut off due to unusually high usage - only to find I had been charged almost $1000 for a one hour call to vodafone to fix the internet (unsuccessfully). I was able to get the fee reversed and my phone reconnected after much stress (and embarrassing tears).

I live in the NT I only have coverage in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs and that is sometimes spasmodic. My works takes me to communities across the NT and can not get coverage anywhere outsied the above areas. Very frustrating. I guess I am one of many customers that never gets to use up my monthly plan, why, can't get coverage if I could afford to pay my plan out and move to telstra I would. Over I am going to change my messagebank to say sorry cant take your call because my provider doesnt offer any service where I am. Comforting that others have the same pain in some way.

5587 Someone from NT thinks vodafone is Vodafone can go fuck themselves. at 27 Dec 2010 11:14:36 PM
I tried to cancell my contract , I was told multiple times that I had been canceled by vodafone, but THEN I kept getting post saying it was being processed. Every time I got one of those letters I rang customer service and was lied to. I was hung up on multiple times, usually while in the middle of a sentence. I was promised half a dozen call backs and never got any. I was repeatedly told no supervisors were available to escalate my call, when I could clearly hear people giving the person I was speaking to instructions in the backgroud

AT the end i bought myself out of my mobile contract with them by sending them back a 6 month old HTC desire.

The one call I got from them was the day after I spent money to get the fuck out of my mobile contract so that I would never have to deal with the useless pricks again. The guy who rang was also the only person who seemed even remotely competent.

Vodafone can go fuck themselves.

I am a customer of vodafone for almost 2 years and have had nothing but trouble. I put up with it all until they decided to stop charging me. When they found out what was goin on they charged me a lump payment. To sort out that mess I tried to make a call to customer care. Was put in waiting lines in excess of 30 mins and then on hold for another twenty mins. Some how they worked out that I owed them $300 for that call. Vodafone you fail!

Most days when I am at work (in the CBD) I get voice mail call backs from VF advising I have one new voice mail. I didn't think much of it at first, but when it started happening on a daily basis I was getting pretty annoyed having my important phone calls being diverted to voice mail due to lack of reception. Not much I could do about this as I guess that's how VF is, and when you ask most people what they know about VF, they will tell you the lack of reception they have. I did not know about this site until this hit the news tonight and wanted to voice out my frustration as well. Also when I am in my house I have zero reception and as I have a work Telstra sim which maintains 100% reception in my house.

4282 Someone from NT thinks vodafone is EPIC NETWORK FAIL ! at 27 Dec 2010 05:46:07 PM
I have had a contract with Vodafone for approx two years now. Although I've never had a problem with Customer Service per say; the Network is pathetic ! I live in Darwin in the Northern Suburbs District & work in the City district. Although Darwin may seem to be classed as a "remote" area, it's still no excuse for the such horrible Network Service I get. Both in the City & the Suburbs I get 1-3 bars of reception usually, & when receiving text messages they are some what delayed anywhere between 5minutes & an hour ! (according to the time stamp that also comes through), this is especially when I receive messages from other Vodafone Users. Attempts to make phone calls can sometimes not even be worth the try; as %50 if the calls I make Im usually met with the now all too familiar "beep, beep, beep", or be half way through the conversation (again more frequently with other Voda Users) and the call drops out with a message on my screen saying "Call Failed". I work in Car Rental and use my Mobile phone to organise many aspects of my day; getting through this efficiently and smoothly is impossible with the Vodafone Network & if the problem pursits will definately NOT be renewing my contract by the end of it. It's simply not worth the distress & especially the inconvinieces it causes for me in my Job ! So, do you think Vodafone will seriously get off their ass and do anything about it ? After numerous phone enquires, they're not even worth my time to go in and directly deal with them; I think NOT !
From one User who definately will not associate with Vodafone again unless they start to value their Clients & provide a more efficient service !

I moved to Darwin 2 months ago and have had nothing but problems, with no reception for mobile or broadband. I have been into the Vodafone shop 4 times and every time I ask for assistance I am told to call 1555. Once the staff even told me I needed to call Customer Support from where I have no coverage!!! I have called 1555 3 times and once they actually asked for another number to call me back on so I went into work on my day off and waited for the return call, needless to say I am still waiting over a month later.

I resorted to sending an online request asking for my payout figure, as once again, the girls at the shop couldn't give me the information and advised I should call 1555! I received an acknowledgement email, and then a week later I received an email asking if the fault was still a problem or had I resolved it myself. If only I could!!!

4063 Someone from NT thinks vodafone is the worst at 27 Dec 2010 05:18:49 PM
I thought Optus was terrible in Darwin. I had no reception in my house in the northern suburbs. I contacted the TIO and Optus released me from my contract finally because I did not have adequate reception. So I went back to what I thought was trusty Vodafone. Apart from being lied to on contract sign up (which I found out later) the reception and data speed was OK. But it has progressively declined to the point where like all of you I am paying for a service I do not get. I have had a few heated conversations with vodafone over a number of issues but nothing is to be resolved. I was in Adelaide CBD 2 weeks ago and there was no service at all! This is when i first found out the extent of the problem as it was all over the newspaper. I will be moving to Telstra despite paying a premium to ensure I have a service. It seems like in telecommunications, you really do pay for what you get now. How sad the ACCC and TIO and others have let things get to this stage.

3182 Someone from NT thinks vodafone is Major fail at 27 Dec 2010 03:38:01 PM
I was unable to get ANY phone reception in my house last year, which is a coastal suburb on the fringe of the Darwin CBD. To make phonecalls I'd have to cross the road outside my place... and even then I'd get drop-outs. This meant I often missed important phone calls, would have to then pay for voice mail messages and then call people back. If I was busy in the house, I would have to skip making calls I'd normally make while going about my business. If it was late at night and I didn't want to go out onto the street, then I'd have to call people the next day.

I made several complaints to Vodafone. During two of these complaints, I was guaranteed a follow-up phone call but never received it.

Additionally, staff continually blamed the phone I was using, so I decided to upgrade. After entering into a new contract with Vodafone with the latest Blackberry Storm, there was still no improvement. I called again. Staff still tried to blame the new phone I'd acquired, said the reception for my area was listed as strong on a reference map they had, said they'd look into it but never got back to me.

This year, fed up with being the poor reception cousin to my friends signed with Telstra and Optus, I decided to jump ship.

Funnily enough, when I called Vodafone to find out how much I would have to pay out to break my contract, I was asked if I wanted to transfer to network/technical section to see if they could fix the reception problems I was having. I politely told the operator I had done this on a number of occasions and nothing changed, and I didn't want to waste my time anymore. Additionally, I travel to remote communities in a regular basis and Telstra was the best provider for these areas.

THEN ... to top it off, I've been unable to unlock the Blackberry Storm I'd taken out under contract with Vodafone, because it was specific to Vodafone - something I wasn't aware of. I'm yet to read the fine print on the contract to check if this was clearly outlined, but the sale staff did not make me aware that it was a phone that could only be used in the Vodafone network. If I'd known this, I would have never signed up with that particular phone with Vodafone in the first place.

So now I'm with Telstra, and my relatively new Blackberry Storms sits rotting in a box because its bound to the worst network provider in Australia.

Not happy.

Had an argument with Palmerston Vodafone over the poor signal strength just 2kms from the Vodafone store. Outside of my house you might be lucky to get one bar. Of course inside the Vodafone store your phone reads full bars!

They don't need to have unlimited plans - the 1G plan the phone is on is effectively unlimited because you'll never get a signal strong enough to use the service.

I have never experienced worse customer service in my life! I conitually call to be put on hold for hours on end and then the phone just cuts out! So I then have to do it all over again. I feel like I need a university degree in codes to read my phone bill and cannot understand how I can possibly go over my cap amount when I use my phone less then the month before when I was under it! Vodofone-you are a blood sucking, money hungry discraceful organisation!

2873 Someone from NT thinks vodafone is Really Bad 3G SERVICE at 27 Dec 2010 02:48:24 PM
I have been a loyal vodafone customer for 14 years. I cannot believe that they have allowed the network to get so bad since 3G services became a fact of life. I live in Darwin and since 3G came along Vodafone has dropped the ball. Yes you get the little 3G symbol on your phone, but NO data flows through. Good luck trying to make a phone call in Palmerston or Darwin Northern Suburbs. VodaDrop should be the new brand. Anyway I have 6 vodafone accounts with my employees, we will not be resigning with Vodadrop when we can get out of our contracts.

Thankfully I am no long with vodafail (my heart goes out to those who are). Despite my complaints I had to wait out my contract before I could leave. Living in Palmerston, I would have to stand in the backyard to get signal and even then I would have call drop outs. Living in Alice Springs was worse!

Reception is TERRIBLE... even though i live in the city, two blocks from a tower i STILL have to stand outside to talk >:( Don't even get me started on the internet usage!!

2443 Someone from NT thinks vodafone is Calls drop out at 27 Dec 2010 01:00:27 PM
Have been with Vodafone for a number of years but certainly the last couple of years things have declined -
1. Calls just drop out for no reason - even when I am in the centre of the the CBD and taking a call from my workplace (which is also located in the CBD)
2. There website absolutely sucks and is just a basket case to navigate
3. Asking for my bill to be emailed to me and never ever receive it. Confirm with their Support that they have the correct email address and they say "yes" but the bill still never turns up in my Inbox (and I have checked my SPAM filters etc).
4. Well, should I even start on the 3G....slow as the proverbial

27 Dec 2010 02:37:48 PM: Hahahaha! That's not a free $200 giftcard...not with Telstra anyway! Telstra will end up having you pay them back with all the huge amounts of fees they slap you with. Telstra is worse than Vodaphone!

30 Dec 2010 10:02:44 AM: if your in a black spot you can get out of your contract with no charge at all. Black spot customers are let out of the contract. DONT TELL a sales rep that your going to TIO (they dont care honestly) ring vodafone (as painful as it maybe) and let them know that your taking them TIO and ask to speak to a team leader. works everytime.

1887 Someone from NT thinks vodafone is too many customers at 27 Dec 2010 10:53:44 AM
I travel between Darwin and Perth. I have a vodafone toggle for my computer access.
I bought it in Darwin about a year ago and the speed and reception was Ok but has been steadily getting worse as they sell more. It is hopeless in the evenings (when everyone gets on it i presume) and also seems to be weather sensitive. Yes i went through the hanging on the phone trying to contact them before I worked out for myself what was going on because they didnt tell me this one. I now ask and complain the old fashioned way with a stamp and envelope and still don't get the truth. I went through the same thing in Perth with them telling me i was in a reception shadow but i was actually on the top of a hill with line of sight to the tower!
Recently the Perth reception North Perth/Coolbinia has improved greatly...using it now.
I bought a subscription for a year 6 months ago. I will have to go to telstra when it expires. Although it costs more it is a whole lot better.

1496 Someone from NT thinks vodafone is A SINKING SHIP at 24 Dec 2010 09:58:28 AM
If you are on contract, the best way out is through the TIO (Ombudsman). Vote with your feet. It's about time companies such as this learn a hard lesson on what happens when you cheat and lie to your customers.
25 Dec 2010 02:23:35 AM: One avenue IS the TIO. Don't expect it to be easy or satisfactory. It is better than not doing anything. And ultimately, the customers pay the costs of the fees. They don't learn a lesson. If they had been learning anything, why are contracts and plans still so confusing and why is the never-endingavalanche of phones launched onto the market STILL so full of dogs- dogs that are sold into our market after overseas countries, when they know what is wrong with the phones, and still they turn up here? I would like to meet ONE person who got the phone they thought they paid/are paying for, that is working satisfactorily after 3 months, without going in for repairs.
If you want to hurt the telcos stop "upgrading", and stop spending so much money on the latest wizz bang toy/status symbol, passport to the "In Crowd". Phones are sold prepaid at about ten times the per month price.I have heard too many times that the iPhone 4 costs $6.45 to make, so all the parasites in between that $6.45 and you take their cut. A "fine" here, a broken contract there- a slight dip in profits. BYO mobiles, but them secondhand- I don't know-THINK OUTSIDE THE BLOODY SQUARE!
25 Dec 2010 10:38:41 AM: It costs a lot more then $6.45, do some checking on Gizmodo and you'll find out the real price.
25 Dec 2010 01:50:09 PM: I did some checking, and there was a lot of variation on the numbers- even though the different websites may have all been sourcing their info from the same sources- (and they may not be reliable),but even @ $140, that's still a lot of fat.And I hope the screen is less fragile than on the one before. More than once I have heard different people almost bragging that they were on their 3rd screen (is the subtext "I'm hipper than you because I've had my status symbol longer than you"? or "I'm cool with this year's object of desire being so fragile"?)
25 Dec 2010 02:09:00 PM: $140 would seem closer to the mark, but there are two things to keep in mind with this though. Markup will always occur, in every industry with every product. Companies are in business to make money. Heck, bread at your local Coles costs .20c to make, and sells for $3-4, percent wise a massive mark up. The second thing to remember is that Vodafone don't set the price, Apple do. When it comes to companies holding control over the how's and why's of a product, Apple is the worst. The limited stock is due to them, the way it's sold is due to them etc. Oh and I just noticed the comment about Prepaids being as much as 10 times a monthly cost... It's a single outright payment vs 24 months contract, you'd be crazy to think that $179 (Most expensive of the prepaid range) is more expensive then a contract.
25 Dec 2010 11:35:52 PM: I'm no fan of Apple- (though I almost entered the world of Steve when I almost bought an iPod Classic, because I got a lot more storage for the money than a few 16G memory cards on my phone, and because I thought, on my pc, that Quicktime sounded better than anything else I had.I found a better, much less consumerist way to do what I wanted, and for less money.) What I was really writing about up there was about, in some measure, WE are part of the problem and we make it too easy for the telcos to rip us off.I think they factor in that they're not going to get away with selling dog phones, and bad reception and billing "errors" with everybody. They also know that they will wear most of us down to just accepting sh!t bcause it is too timewasting and debilitating to keep trying to right wrongs. Dumb- really dumb, is to assume it's going to be different when you"upgrade" to the new shiny dog, with a lousy telco, who will not have changed since the last time they failed to provide what they took your money for.I dare not suggest collusion, but I can't help noticing(except for Telstra) how similar, if not identical, the telcos prices are for phones and plans.(I have not researched that thoroughly, because going on a plan hasn't been something I've seriously considered.) I think we have crossed wires about the pre-paid thing. If a basic plan for a phone is,eg, &29 a month, if that phone is available pre-paid (not from Mobicity- that's different), that phone seems to cost about $290 before it drops into the bargain bin.BTW- bread costs more than that to make, and goes stale, which means its not all going to be sold, and complying with health regulations is a cost, etc etc.BUT, since most people eat bread and don't have/make/want to bake bread there is the opportunity to make a high profit. Perhaps the ACCC could take Apple on if they had hard facts about Apple's behavior, unless laws about what you've just described have changed since a few highly publicised court cases a few years back. Something, from where I'm looking, has given most of the telcos a sense of security that they can carry on the way they do. Having said that, I still think Vodafone,by far, is the worst.
25 Dec 2010 11:43:50 PM: The absolute, no one even close, WORST!

To all that are complaining, I know why u cannot call anyone ... The people your are trying to call have blocked your number cause they find it to 'painful' to speak to u!! (no reception issue)I cannot believe people waste time on this. Try being nice to the customer service staff , I'm sure they don't go into your place of work and blame their list of personal problems on u.. Most people have bigger issues than phone reception in their lives to deal with , but it's all about u isn't it?? !!
23 Dec 2010 09:54:54 PM: Actually it's all about me..........the customer.
23 Dec 2010 10:22:27 PM: Yeah your the customer , if u don't like them ... Leave they probably don't like u either! I'm a customer at alot of places everyday and don't feel the need to be a complaining waste of space , if I need to say something I say it and don't blame the individual person who is working their butt off in a thank-less job! I'm sure u wouldn't jump onto a website as soon as u had a good experience. Grow a pair and move on
23 Dec 2010 10:48:32 PM: On the contrary, only the other day I complimented someone on their customer service with a web comment and I followed it up with a phone call as well. The sales person, company rep, customer service agent, call it what you will is the shop window for the Organisation. They are the front line staff, the first individual that a customer deals with. As far as growing a pair is concerned, I have grown a pair and they are bigger than yours.
23 Dec 2010 10:55:47 PM: This isn't a matter of not liking the company, it's a matter of Vodafone advertising and selling a service they know they can't provide. Then they understaff their service centres so that people can't get their problems resolved. The people who work in Vodafone stores should be just as upset with Vodafone as the customers for making their jobs infinitely harder.
23 Dec 2010 11:09:05 PM: Hmm just to easy to not tell the truth online , isn't it. As far as the staff being the front window, I agree but does this mean they should be treated Like crap? They have the same issues with phones etc , instead of being rude , getting pissed off or ruining your health and others by being/ stressing others out just go to a different company ! If u had the choice of Vodafone and before even seeing if it worked ( personal responsibility ) pay your contract out and go! It's always someone else's fault , no one forced u into that shop.
23 Dec 2010 11:14:48 PM: Well let's hope there is some good from this website and the customers and staff can enjoy Vodafone ! Maybe some direct letters to the CEO asking for a direct response from him!
24 Dec 2010 11:30:18 AM: you are making gross assumptions that all customers treat the staff badly. sometimes frustration boils over, but what steps are Vodafone management taking to help alleviate the problem for staff and customers?
and as for the previous comment - "It's always someone else's fault , no one forced u into that shop." pardon? I entered a contract. I pay them, they supply service. I'm still paying them but where is my service? both phone and customer!

I upgraded my phone with Crazy John's who use the Vodafone network in June and from day one it's been failure. I can only get reception in one room in my apartment even though I live only 4 km from the CBD and even then it's nowhere near 100%. I'll have one - MAYBE two - bars of 3G, but sometimes zero. And often when hanging up from a call (If I've been able to get a line out, which can take multiple attempts) I'll see that it's showing the tower symbol not 3G anyway.
The number of times I have missed calls and only got a v/m notification HOURS later is too many to count. Same with text msgs - if they come in after 10.30 I'm too scared to reply in case it was sent hours earlier and I've just received it but it's too late to reply.
Downloading a podcast can take over half an hour here, whereas in Melb it took less than 4 mins!!
I have complained and complained and complained and the best they could offer was a reset remotely, and when that didn't work they made me send it off for two weeks and gave me the WORST loaner phone ever created while I waited, and then there was no improvement anyway. I don't know what else to do.
I shouldn't have to buy myself out of a contract when they are not providing a service. Surely they are in breach of contract and I should be compensated not punished???

before moving to Darwin, I checked the 3G coverage maps on the vodafone website. Apparently, most of Darwin has 100% coverage.
Not so.
Coverage in Darwin is pretty much the CBD and a few central suburbs. I can only make and receive calls in my fofice at the centre of town. And if I want to surf the net on my Blackberry, again, it is only in the centre of town and it is SLOW.
The coverage maps are completely false adn innacurate adn now I have to keep paying this $70 a month plan for the next 12 months - even though i have no coverage! (if anyone would from Vodafone woudl like to chat, am more than happy for you to look up my phone records to see how many calls get successfully get made),
